Former Union communications minister Sukhram was on Friday convicted by a Delhi court for amassing Rs 4.25 crore of disproportionate assets that included seizure of Rs 2.45 crore from his residence in New Delhi.

Special CBI Judge V K Maheshwari held the 82-year-old politician from Himachal Pradesh guilty under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

During the arguments in the case, special CBI prosecutor Gurdial Singh had alleged that Sukhram, in his capacity as a public servant during the period from June 20, 1991 to August 16, 1996, had abused his official position and amassed huge assets including one palatial house at Ghaziabad and a farm house in Himachal Pradesh, besides cash, bank balances and jewellery.

  5. SC notice to Tamil Nadu lawyers over frequent strikes
The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHCAA), whose members resorted to arson and stone pelting against police, as to why their lingering judicial work paralysing strike be not declared illegal.

Undaunted by the misdirected show of strength, a lawyer from Tamil Nadu took courage to stand up alone against the continuing stir by advocates in Chennai and wanted the apex court to take action as per its 2003 judgment, which had virtually barred lawyers from going on strike.

Petitioner R Muralidaran through counsel S Balaji filed the PIL making strong remarks against the dictatorial manner in which the Madras HC Advocates Association (MHCAA) has been arbitrarily calling for strikes on one pretext or the other paralysing judicial work in the state.

Appearing for the petitioner, senior advocate Harish Salve told a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices J M Panchal and A K Ganguly that lawyers' strike in TN has become an endemic problem requiring intervention of the apex court and sending of a strong message.

The High Court has functioned for only nine days this year because of the strike calls given by the lawyer bodies in support of Tamils in Sri Lanka and numerous other issues, including protest against the recent amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, Salve said pointing to the collossal loss of judicial time, especially when the courts faced huge pendency.
